Jackson, Michigan: Discover historical tours, arts and family fun this summer in Michigan

Welcome to Jackson, Michigan! Located in the
south central part of the state, this is a destination that is perfect for families,
students and large groups. Hi I’m Shannon. Today I am visiting Jackson,
a lovely city in Michigan that has a great combination of history, culture and a thriving
arts district to check out. The perfect place to begin exploring Jackson’s
rich heritage is The Waterloo Farm Museum. Nestled along a scenic rural road, the museum
highlights a farm built in the 1850s, as well as a woodworking and blacksmith’s shop,
a restored Perkins windmill, and a log house with a stone fireplace.
I love interactive museums. Be sure to schedule a group heritage tour where you are hosted
by docents in period dress! Look even deeper into the history of Jackson
at The Ella Sharp Museum, featuring an 1860s log cabin, Victorian Farm House, a one-room
school house, and six fantastic galleries. The grounds are a wonderful place to explore,
especially Farm Lane, where many festivals are held throughout the year.
Your admission to The Ella Sharp museum can also be combined with a thought-provoking
visit to ‘Cell Block 7.’ Uncovering interesting facts and history about the early years of
Michigan’s state prison system, which started in Jackson. Cell Block 7 is located between
two active cell blocks in what was once the largest walled-prison in the world.
Jackson’s arts scene is also thriving, and Art 634 is one of the many artistic experiences
visitors can enjoy here. A center for the creative spirit, featuring
music, dance, visual arts, theater, and jewelry making, Art 634 has a unique history. Located
in an 1850s manufacturing facility, it was originally a carriage and wagon factory for
Michigan’s first state prison. This old manufacturing facility is located across from
the Armory Arts Village, a creative residence, which was the first state prison!
Before you leave Jackson, plan a visit to The Pioneer Wine Trail, where you can experience
award-winning wines from Michigan’s southeastern region.
I have had both a fun and thought-provoking visit to Jackson. The numerous museums, arts
venues, and historical sites make this a perfect Michigan destination for relaxation and discovery.
