Celebrating the Spring Holidays

Omaha’s Labor Day Parade

Omaha’s Labor Day Parade

THAT WAS JUST ONE OPTION FOR THOSE ENJOYING LABOR DAY. ANOTHER OPTION — THE CITY’S BIG PARADE DOWNTOWN. AND AS WE DISCOVERED — A LOT OF FOLKS SHOWED UP. EVERYONE LOVES A PARADE…THE TRAMPING OF FEET… AND EVERY BEAT OF THE DRUM. A BAND MAKES EVERYONE STAND AND CHEER AS THEY COME. BUT OMAHA’S LABOR DAY PARADE HAD MUCH MORE THAN WHAT VICTOR ARDEN AND PHIL OHMAN PENNED IN THEIR 1931 SONG…I LOVE A PARADE. THERE WERE FLAGS WAVING, VETERANS MARCHING AND OLD CARS CHUGGIN… … WHAT’S THE BEST PART? THE BALLOONS? THE BALLOONS… AH YES,,,BAL LOONS…SEVER AL STORIES HIGH. SO JUST WHO IS THIS GUY? … ONE OF THE BUILDERS OFF FRAGGLE ROCK. A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE REALLY DON’T KNOW WHO IT IS THEY’RE TOO YOUNG. I REMEMBER IT THOUGH… WORKERS HAD TO LAY THIS ‘DOOZER’ DOWN TO GET UNDER THE BRIDGE. … CAN I GET A HIGH FIVE?… FAIRY TALE FIGURES WERE A BIG ATTRACTION. CINDERELLA — HANDING OUT PICTURES OF HER FRIEND ELSA. THE BEST PART? … GETTING TO SEE ALL THE SMILES OF THE CHILDREN.JUST LIGHT UP… AND KRISTOFF HARVESTER FROM THE MOVIE ‘FROZEN.” … IT WAS A LONG BOAT RIDE HERE I’M GLAD WE MADE IT IN TIME… AND ONLY IN NEBRASKA WILL YOU FIND PARADES WITH FRONT END LOADERS, MACY THE DOG, AND STROLLING MINSTRELS ON A FLAT BED TRUCK. …NATS… TWENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE WATCHED AS NEARLY FOUR THOUSAND OTHERS TOOK PART IN THE PARADE. AND OF COURSE THERE WAS A LOT OF CANDY BEING TOSSED AROUND. SO WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT LABOR DAY? … YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORK. BUT I’M WORKING. YES YOU ARE BUT YOU ENJOY YOUR JOB… AB — SO — LUTELY… AND NO ‘DOOZERS’ — WERE HARMED. EVEN THOUGH SKIES WERE OVERCAST, RAIN DID HOLD OFF FOR THOSE WHO WATCHED. PARADE SPECTATORS ONLY FELT A FEW SPRINKLES.
